British import Mascalzone has burst onto the scene in Houston with 2 already bustling restaurants. Ironically I had been to the London location in Putney several times on visits there. Once I saw the West Houston location open up, I wasn’t sure it would be the same. My doubts were quickly nixed upon our first visit, the pasta’s are just as they were back during our visits to London.
There’s a plethora of options from house made pastas in a delicious Bolognese sauce to a black squid pasta with lobster. Their namesake is a hybrid of a pizza and a calzone, and it is wondrous. First of all, their pizza’s are thin crust with an expansive list of options, and fired up in a Marana Forni oven. It’s mighty tasty and definitely a must try. Don’t forget to ask for their chili oil, it’s their trademark instead of the usual crushed red pepper, but be careful it’s not for the faint of heart. The restaurant owner is former Italian Olympic boxer Andrea Magi, whom went to culinary school before pursuing boxing who based the menu on family recipes.
Both locations are family friendly and open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week.
